Characters and Gender

I don't understand why there is a gender indicator on character pages.
How does forcing a GM to choose between two rather rigid genders on a character file help organize a campaign?
Also, why is there only two options?
This seems kind of useless and outdated, especially since so many of these games are set in fantasy settings.

    There is a gender toggle because we have a character name generator in place, together with different name databases associated with each gender.
