Zoom on Maps

What determines how far you can zoom in un uploaded map? I uploaded a few maps of different sizes and there are only 3 levels of zoom. On another site I saw 5 levels of zoom, but after copying the picture and uploading it as my own map, I only have 3 levels of zoom.

Some maps, you can zoom in to see individual pixels but my 3 zoom settings are 1 zoom, full size and a pan out that I don't see any use for at all. Any help is appreciated!

We used to offer 5 levels of zoom, but it was too much for the server to
handle. We hope to offer it again in the near future when we upgrade our
hardware. I can't give an exact date thought.

    Wow, fastest reply evah!

I saw that in Suggestions and was just coming back here to let you know I found it.

I would second the Suggestion, the starting point should be the full image. Two zooms from there is gravy, really. The zoom out from full size is frustrating, and while it does offer you" three settings" I think the frustration level outweighs any gain in saying there are three settings.

If size is the issue, I would suggest capping Campaign or Ascendant User map space. Personally, I would prefer one kick ass world map I could zoom into than a series of castle and dungeon maps.

But my initial question came from wanting to know how detailed I should make my world map, so thank you for a prompt response.

I know I'm resurrecting a dead thread (zombie thread, ohnoes!), but I've noticed that there are a LOT of questions about the maps and the ability to zoom. From my research on the help forums it seems that the major issue is that breaking the map down into smaller chunks for the higher zoom levels is computationally intensive. (If I remember correctly, each level of zoom requires that the picture be cut into either 9 or 16 pieces?) It's not the storage or display aspects, but simply the processing power required to chop up the map into smaller chunks: 1x1, 3x3, 9x9, 27x27, 81x81, and so on.

What if we could do this on our end, then submit the image pieces in a zipped file? Would it be possible (with appropriate naming and directory structure conventions) to simply unzip that file so that we can have all 5 levels of zoom? I realize it would be time consuming on my end to do this by hand, but I'm only looking at doing one or two maps.

Just wanted to throw the suggestion out there to see if it was plausible or possible.

I've been looking into this for you, and for right now I'm going to say that it's a no. Micah can give you a more technical answer than I can, but for right now we've got a few other things to focus on as far as the server goes and other features, but map zoom is definitely on our list of things to improve upon.

I'm glad you brought this up. We've recently upgraded our servers, and it
might be feasible to once again open up the higher levels of zoom. I don't
have time to mess with it immediately, but it's worth a test.

If it doesn't bring the server to its knees, we'll definitely see about
    bringing this back.

Very cool! I'll keep an eye out for it, just in case it makes a comeback.

    Thanks, Micah!
